Irish dance has a long and colorful history that’s deeply tied to Irelands culture and traditions. It started hundreds of years ago with the early celts, who used music and movement in their celebrations and rituals. Over time, Irish dance picked up influences from other European styles of dance, but it always kept its own flare. By the 1700s, dance masters were travelling around the country teaching steps and organizing local competitions, which helped shape well-known dances like the Jig and the reel. In the late 1800s, groups like the Gaelic League worked to preserve Irish culture, and dance became an important part of that movement. Late on, official organizations helped set rules and standards, turning Irish dance into a respected art form. Then, in the 1900s, Riverdance took the world by storm, bringing Irish dance to huge international audiences. Today, it’s still going strong, blending old traditions with new styles and amazing energy.
